What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. Taekwondo may be loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist" or "the way of kicking and punching." The term "traditional taekwondo" typically refers to the martial art as it was established in the 1950s and 1960s in the South Korean military forces. Taekwondo training generally includes a system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes and may also include various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and joint locks (Hapkido).

What do you teach?

We teach Taekwondo, Hapkido, Yeousohnkido and Tactical Hapkido as well as other basic self defense techniques. Taekwondo consists of kicks, punch and forms. Hapkido involves using you opponent’s body in self defense scenarios. Yeousohnkido and Tactical Hapkido are types of Hapkido that go deeper into this type of training. These are advanced self defense techniques.

What will the student learn?

We teach and tailor the classes based on the students. Kid’s classes have different types of training tools used versus a class for adults. We also will teach more intense techniques to adults. Students will get cardiovascular exercise, learn better balance, how to block, punch and kick affectively. The ultimate goal is to give students self confidence and the ability to defend themselves and get away from harm should a dangerous situation arise.

What age can start?

Students can start at the age of 5 and above. We do allow 4 year olds but a parent must take class with them to assist the instructor with their child. We find in most cases a 4 year old requires much more one on one help and a parent can assist the instructor, otherwise the instructor will spend most of the time with the 4 year old student which is not fair to other students in the classes.

What if I am an older student?

Your age does not matter. If there are limitations to what you can do because of your age or physical ability that is fine. We simply direct you into training a different way and build on the strengths that you do have. If is never too late to start. We have a visiting black belt that is 69 and enjoys working with adult students. Anyone can do it!

How and when can I start?

You can start at anytime. To get started you can either call us to talk about the details or simply come to the dojang any of the nights we have classes. We suggest coming 10 to 15 minutes before class so you can talk to the lead instructor. You are welcome to watch a class or participate. If you plan on participating please come in shorts or sweat pants and a loose fitting shirt. The important thing to realize is we were all there at one time; choosing to start and perhaps being a little apprehensive around the new students. Don’t worry, just come on out and give it a try!
